What are AI smart glasses?

AI smart glasses are glasses with a small computer built into the frame. Inside, you'll find a camera, microphones, tiny speakers, a battery and a chip. An AI assistant listens to your voice and talks back.

Most AI glasses have no screen, so you look through normal lenses, just like regular sunglasses or spectacles. The smart part works through sound: you ask a question out loud, and you hear the answer.

That makes them very different from a VR headset. A headset like the Meta Quest 3 covers your eyes and puts you inside a virtual world. AI glasses leave your view of the real world untouched.

How do Ray-Ban Meta glasses work?

Ray-Ban Meta glasses work as a team with your phone. The glasses do the seeing, hearing and talking, while your phone links them to the internet. Meta AI, which runs on Meta's computers online, does the thinking.

Title: How Ray-Ban Meta glasses answer a question - Description: How Ray-Ban Meta glasses answer a question

Figure 1. How Ray-Ban Meta glasses answer a question

Here is what happens when you ask a question:

1.      You speak. Say "Hey Meta", or press the button on the frame.

2.      The glasses listen and look. The microphones pick up your voice. If you ask about something in front of you, the camera takes a quick picture.

3.      Your phone sends it. The glasses connect to your phone by Bluetooth. The Meta AI app then sends your question over the internet.

4.      Meta AI works out the answer. It reads your words and the picture, then writes a reply.

5.      You hear the reply. The answer plays through small speakers in the arms of the glasses.

Photos and videos work a little differently. The glasses save them on their own 32 GB of storage, and you move them to your phone later in the Meta AI app.

Because Meta AI runs online, keep your phone nearby with mobile data or Wi-Fi turned on.

What can Ray-Ban Meta glasses do?

•       Take photos and videos hands-free. Say "Hey Meta, take a photo", or press the capture button.

•       Answer questions about what you see. Look at a monument, a menu or a plant, and ask Meta AI about it.

•       Make calls and send messages. It works with WhatsApp, Messenger and your phone's own calls and texts.

•       Play music and podcasts. Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music all play through the glasses.

•       Translate conversations. Live translation started with English, French, Italian and Spanish, and Meta added German and Portuguese in September 2025. Download a language pack to use it offline.

•       Go live. You can stream what you see to Instagram or Facebook.

Ray-Ban Meta features for India

Meta has added a few features just for Indian users:

•       Hindi: Since October 2025, you can talk to Meta AI in Hindi. Turn it on in the Meta AI app under the glasses' language settings.

•       UPI payments: Meta began testing UPI Lite payments under ₹1,000. You look at a UPI QR code and say "Hey Meta, scan and pay." The money comes from your WhatsApp-linked bank account. Check the app to see if it's available to you.

•       A celebrity voice: Meta AI can reply in Deepika Padukone's voice.

Are Ray-Ban Meta glasses safe for privacy?

Ray-Ban Meta camera glasses have an LED on the front that lights up when they take a photo or video. It tells people around you that you're recording.

Meta has tightened this over time:

•       Covering the LED stops a recording from starting.

•       In July 2026, an update began turning off the camera if the LED has been damaged or removed.

•       In August 2026, Meta started rolling out a fix that stops a recording if someone covers the LED halfway through.

Critics still say the light is small and easy to miss, so good manners matter. Ask before you film someone, and follow "no recording" signs in places like hospitals, offices and exam halls.

Are AI smart glasses worth buying?

They're worth it if you'll use the camera, audio and AI every day. If you mainly want to watch movies or read on a big screen, AR display glasses or a VR headset will suit you better.

Good fit for:

•       Creators and travellers who want hands-free, first-person video

•       People who take many calls or listen to music on the move

•       Anyone who wants quick answers about what's in front of them

Think twice if:

•       You want to see information on a screen, because Ray-Ban Meta has none

•       You don't want to charge another gadget every day

•       You're often without mobile data, since Meta AI needs the internet

•       You want every new feature on day one, because some reach India later than the US

Tips before you buy AI glasses in India

1.      Pick the model for your needs. Choose Gen 3 for the newest features, Gen 2 for a lower price, or Oakley Meta for sports.

2.      Choose your lenses. Clear, sun, polarised and Transitions lenses are available. The frames can also take prescription lenses.

3.      Check the fit. Try them on if you can. The Wayfarer style comes in standard and large sizes.

4.      Ask for a GST invoice. Check the warranty terms too, before you pay.

5.      Compare other brands. Lenskart's B by Lenskart glasses use Google's Gemini AI. They were in early access in May 2026, with a planned price of ₹27,000.

You can compare current models and prices in Cyphon's Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta collections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Ray-Ban Meta glasses have a screen?

No. Ray-Ban Meta glasses use sound, not a screen. Only the Meta Ray-Ban Display has a small screen in the right lens, and it isn't sold officially in India yet (October 2026).

Do Ray-Ban Meta glasses work without a phone?

Not fully. You need a phone with the Meta AI app to set them up and to use Meta AI. Meta AI also needs an internet connection through your phone.

Do Ray-Ban Meta glasses work with an iPhone?

Yes. They work with both iPhones and Android phones through the Meta AI app.

Can I put prescription lenses in Ray-Ban Meta glasses?

Yes. Meta says the frames work with prescription lenses. Ask your optician whether your power can be fitted.

How long does the Ray-Ban Meta battery last?

Gen 3 lasts up to 9 hours, and Gen 2 up to 8 hours. The Gen 2 charging case adds up to 48 more hours, and a 20-minute charge takes the glasses to 50%.

Can I talk to Ray-Ban Meta glasses in Hindi?

Yes. Since October 2025, you can choose Hindi as your Meta AI language in the app. Live translation is a separate feature, so check the app for the languages it supports today.

What's the difference between Ray-Ban Meta and XREAL glasses?

Ray-Ban Meta glasses have a camera and an AI assistant, but no screen. XREAL glasses are built mainly to show a large virtual screen. You plug them into a phone, laptop or game console to watch, play or work.
